INDIA TRIP

Project overview

In 2023, I received the New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship to participate in a two week international design studio based primarily at Amity University, while also exploring the Golden Triangle of India. As a small group we collaborated on proposals aimed at improving the overall comfort and wellbeing across the campus environment for students and staff while also supporting recommendations towards achieving Net Zero emissions.

We live in a society where access to architecturally designed housing is often limited to a small proportion of the population. This prompted me to reflect on what my future role in the architectural field might look like as we exist in this global crisis. This trip significantly broadened my understanding of architecture’s social responsibility, encouraging me to consider how design and construction can contribute meaningfully in low-income and developing contexts, where equitable, context responsive solutions are most needed.

Without access to computers, the production of high quality drawings were limited, requiring a more resourceful and hands-on approach. Materials were sourced locally from the surrounding area where we were staying.

Using a thin piece of canvas mounted onto cardboard, I created a simple conceptual drawing with watercolour and coffee stains. This piece functioned as a visual vision board, communicating my ideas for enhancing the overall comfort and wellbeing of the campus. I presented it to the Head of the Architecture Department at Amity University.
