Jin Bedroom

Project details

This project involves the design and rendering of a bedroom for the fictional Jin family, specifically the 2 daughters, 8 and 10. The family asked for separate beds and 2 chairs where the girls could read. The style the girls wanted was a mix of Scandinavian modern and Boho

While designing this space I kept in mind the girls' desire for a bright and cheerful space. I wanted to ensure that the room could age with the girls, which meant selecting furniture that could also be seen in a teen's room.

Floor and Lighting Plan

As you can probably tell this is a small space, the Jins asked for separate beds, night stands, chairs for reading, a dresser, and storage for books and toys. Due to the requests furniture layout was quite the task. The beds are relatively close together to ensure the ability to easily move around the room and still have space to play.

When it came to lighting, the girls wanted bedside lights, a light that could be left on at night, and lamps for each chair. I decided that a fun pendant light would help tie the space together.

Fabrics and Finishes

With Scandinavian Modern mixed with Boho as the style of this space, I knew there could only be one large pattern. I started the space by selecting a peel-and-stick wallpaper, opting for peel-and-stick over traditional wallpaper so its easy to change out as the girls age. Once I had the wallpaper it was easy to cement the color scheme of the space, dusty pinks and golden almost burnt yellows. With the warm color scheme in mind, I knew brass accents would be perfect.

With budget in mind, I ensured the furniture I selected would work with the golden oak floors. All of the wood furniture is from West Elm, to ensure the tone of wood was consistent. I opted for a textured cream area rug and chairs, so even though the pieces were neutral, there was still visual interest. I chose to do dusty pink flax linen duvets for both girls, as dusty pink is the base of the color scheme.

Furniture and Fixtures

While I typically love to mix and match furniture, I found that given the size of the room sticking with one collection was the right choice for the space. The Sarah Sherman Samuel Arches collection from West Elm allowed me to have interesting pieces without them becoming overwhelming. I also believe that the pieces will age well with the girls. For reading chairs I opted for armless chairs, to save on space.

For lighting I knew I wanted to play into the more boho lights. I opted to go for a pendant between the girls' beds. The family wanted light's next to the beds for reading and for each reading chair to have its own lamp. They also requested a small table lamp that could be left on as a night light. I chose to go with West Elm's ribbed sconces and table lamp to add even more texture to the space.
