The Hokie Stone Quarry is located in Blacksburg, Virginia. The quarry is roughly 9 acres big and has been in operational and in use since 1869. The quarry itself has very steep slopes, about 20%, and is very bare otherwise. The quarry shape is already interesting as is but it’s not walkable in its current state. The only structures on it are the buildings where they cut the stone in and operate from.
My goal for this quarry was to create different perspectives by manipulating the topography throughout the park. I wanted to create sight lines and play with the different ways I could create reflections throughout the park. Another one of my goals was to reintroduce vegetation into the site, currently, as of 2023, there is no vegetation on it. So, I wanted to add some pockets of vegetation to add some greenery to the park. I also added some grass to create a more family-friendly space to spend the day in.
