The edge

Project overview

HouseLife studio began with an investigation of Rick Laptrier's home in Lovett Bay where we chose to explore the journey and multi-scaled experience through an examination of the ‘‘edge’’. The application of the ‘‘edge’’ lens onto cockatoo island lead us to explore the land and it’s inverted land mass, looking into Sydney Habour and the psychological responce to positioning around water.

A series of island studies

Design

A new wharf aims to promote an increased sense of awareness on arrival to the island. The proposed lengthily wharf stamps its presence on the landscape. The Island was once a central meeting spot and fishing ground for the first nations groups which occupied different areas of the surrounding harbour. The proposal reinstates Cockatoo Island wharf as a meeting place and transportation hub. The interface between land and water is broadened creating a physical connection to Sydney’s marine identity and an opportunity for a deeper connection with country. The minimal infrastructural intervention restores the approach to a sensitive, welcoming arrival sequence, where the architecture feathers between the water, land and sky.
