This was a competition brief run by PG Bison. We were given a site and unit layout. The brief initiated the design of compact living spaces integrated with community facilities. Interior design was given precedence allowing for opportunity to show off the brands versatile interior products.
The site is located in Motherwell, a rural area in South Africa. Motherwell lacks community social spaces, contributing to its youth substance abuse problem. This mixed-use housing center aims to give space back to the community, providing areas where they can socialize and partake in community activities, becoming a gathering hub for the area locals. The residential units are raised to open up community space below. Double-volume living spaces open up to a common courtyard, creating interaction between the units. An ergonomic design approach centred in human form and movement was taken to ensure comfort in the compact spaces.
