Dipingere la Città

Painting the City

This summer abroad studio, led by Moncada Rangel, delved into the realm of tactical urbanism in Borgata. Borgata, a charming coastal town in Sicily, boasts a vibrant and diverse population. Our mission was to present the town's offerings in a universally understandable manner, thereby enhancing safety and awareness in the area.

The project centered around a small beach and the alleyways that connected the town center to the beach more directly through design-connected alleyways leading to the beach. Unfortunately, the beach had very little pedestrian space due to the overwhelming parking lot. However, with our innovative design that clearly differentiated between vehicle and pedestrian space, we aimed to make this area safer and more user-friendly, thereby bringing a significant and positive change to the community.

Initial Iterations

Results

I initially incorporated traditional Sicilian symbols into my design to connect new and old but then moved towards less specific iconography. The final parking lot design organizes the cars and allows people to walk freely. The concentric circles act as meeting spaces and link back to the alley designs, completing the path.
